Garden Writing Course

A five session online course delivered by Noel Kingsbury (an author of some 26 books and countless magazine articles) intended for anyone who want to work on their writing skills, be it for conventional publication, leaflets, nursery catalogues, blog or simply their own pleasure. We will look at writing about gardens, at plant profiles and how to describe practical tasks. It will involve live discussion, sharing of material, mutual discussion and supportive criticism.

1) Introduction, October 29 - What is garden writing for? What are the different genres? Different media: articles, books, blogs, descriptive leaflet etc. Who is being addressed? Register of communication: inspiration, information, promotion, philosophical enquiry. Task: make selections of favourite garden articles, plant profiles and technique articles

2) Writing about gardens, November 19 - Discussion of examples. Drawing up an ideal format for an effective article; checklist of information/description to include. Task: write a garden article.

3) Plant Profiles, December 11 - Discussion of examples. Drawing up an ideal format for an effective profile; checklist of information/description to include. Task: write a plant profile

4) Technique, January 7 - Writing a description of a technical process, best ways to break down and present information, role of illustrations; checklist of steps to complete description. Task: write a technical task description

5) Final round up, January 28 - Round up of what we have learnt. Other aspects of garden writing: history, philosophical, critical, promotional.
